H2 Assembly
Plant
A vehicle as advanced as General Motor’s HUMMER® H2 could
only be made in a plant as advanced as AM General’s automotive facility
in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Opened in May, 2002, The HUMMER H2 Assembly Plant represents the culmination
of extraordinary efforts put forth by many people from General Motors
and AM General in a unique business arrangement. AM General built the
plant specifically to assemble the exciting HUMMER H2 SUV (Sport Utility
Vehicle) and the SUT (Sport Utility Truck) for General Motors.
The 673,000-square-foot facility sits on about 56 acres of property adjacent
to AM General’s HMMWV and HUMMER H1 Assembly Plant. Here the latest
technology and the best, most competitive manufacturing practices from
around the world come together, ensuring new standards of performance.
Vehicles are assembled in a "lean manufacturing" environment,
representing a radical departure from traditional plant techniques. A
team approach is used, enabling the plant to produce high-quality products
at an unprecedented level of efficiency. The focus is on people systems,
built-in quality, customer responsiveness and cost, with safety being
an overriding priority.
The H2 plant consists of three main manufacturing areas: the body shop,
the paint shop and the general assembly area. Among other things, this
"wired" factory has 80 miles of Ethernet cable, six miles of
phone cable, 2,080 network phone ports and 58,000 feet of fiber optic
cable. Always conscious of environmental issues, AM General built the
facility with a sophisticated industrial wastewater treatment plant which
pretreats process water from the paint shop prior to sending it to the
city water treatment facility.
The HUMMER H2 Assembly Plant further enhances AM General’s renowned
ability to make high-quality, low-volume product with great flexibility
and speed.
