HUMMER H1® Assembly Plant

The 550,000 plus square-foot main facility in Mishawaka, Indiana, is adjacent to AM General's HUMMER H2® Assembly Plant. In this plant, the world's best performance four- wheel-drive vehicle is assembled with the utmost attention to detail.

Fully-assembled military HMMWV's and the commercial H1 driveable chassis are both assembled in the main facility and utilize the same manufacturing processes. These vehicles are produced in an environment utilizing "lean manufacturing" principles and techniques. The manufacturing focus is on people systems and practices, rigid military standards that assure built-in quality, customer responsiveness, cost containment, and employee safety as an overriding priority.

The HMMWV and HUMMER H1 assembly facilities include a second plant of approximately 75,000 square feet utilizing craftsman style operations for finish trimming interior and exterior, painting, and final assembly. It is in this plant that the HUMMER H1 takes on attributes to become a civilized version of the very durable and reliable military HMMWV.

In addition to the manufacturing facilities, the HMMWV and HUMMER H1 operations include an on-site vehicle test track and evaluation area. All vehicles produced go through a rigorous test track evaluation to assure that each vehicle produced meets high standards of quality and performance.

ISO Registration

AM General's HMMWV/H1 and HUMMER H2 assembly plants have achieved ISO9001:2000 registration from the Quality Management Institute (QMI), an internationally recognized independent registrar company.

QMI evaluates a company's ability to meet specific quality program standards. The ISO 9001 standard, one of a series adopted by the International Organization for Standardization in 1987, is internationally recognized and establishes the requirements for a company's quality system. AM General has had registration to an ISO standard since 1993.

The newest 2000 revision emphasizes a customer satisfaction process approach and continuous improvement.
